Make Your Own Matcha: A Private Workshop with High Tribe Aerial Studio

On Saturday, 3 October, from 15:45 to 17:45, we hosted a private Make Your Own Matcha Workshop at Morii Teahouse, Kopli 16, Tallinn, together with High Tribe Aerial Studio. Twelve participants came to us straight from their hammock yoga lesson, swapped the hammocks for bowls and bamboo whisks, and spent the next two hours with matcha.

A short talk first

We started at the table with the basics: where matcha comes from and its history, the health benefits people ask us about most, and how matcha is meant to be consumed. We also unpacked a few of the words that appear on matcha labels, cultivars among them, so the group knows what they are reading the next time they pick up a tin.

Koicha, usucha and a matcha americano

Then the demonstrations. We prepared koicha, the thick tea, and usucha, the thin tea, side by side, and followed with matcha tea made long with water, the drink some call a matcha americano. Everyone tasted each one, with matcha cookies on the table to go with them.

Two whisking techniques, then everyone's turn

We usually show two whisking techniques, and this group saw both before picking up a whisk themselves. Whisking decides how the foam looks and how smooth the matcha tastes, so we gave it time. After that, everyone whisked their own matcha and built their own drink, served over ice. The choices on the table:

  • Base: strawberry matcha latte or mango matcha latte
  • Milk: lactose-free dairy, oat, almond or coconut

“They came here after their hammock yoga lesson, and it was great.”

The finish: matcha coconut cloud

We closed the afternoon with a matcha coconut cloud, the last tasting of the day and one to try at home. Two hours, twelve people, twelve different drinks: a talk, three ways of preparing matcha, two whisking techniques and a glass each that nobody else made.

Book your own private workshop

A private workshop follows the same plan as this one: a short talk, demonstrations, a tasting and hands-on whisking, and everyone leaves having made their own drink. It suits a team afternoon, a studio community after class, or friends who want to do something together that is calm and hands-on. Our next event is the same format: book your own private workshop for your team, studio or group of friends. Write to us at info@moriitea.eu or ask at the counter. If you would rather join an open session, we hold a workshop every Sunday at 14:00 at Kopli 16.
